Junichi Arai has had a long and distinguished career working directly with many fashion designers including Issey Miyake and Rei Kawakubo. He has initiated and developed highly innovative fibres and processes for which he has received awards. These awards include:

International Trade and Industry Minister’s Prize at the Grand Fair of Synthetic Fibres, Japan
Special Prize, First Mainichi Fashion Grand Prize
Honorary Member Royal Designers for Industry, England
Design Medal, Textile Institute


He has exhibited regularly at major centres in Japan and throughout the world including:
Rhode Island School of Design, USA
Textile Museum Toronto, Canada
The Museum of Applied Arts Helsinki, Finland
Pacific Design Centre, Los Angeles, USA
Museum of Textile History Böras, Sweden
Netherlands Design Museum, Amsterdam, Holland
Cooper-Hewitt Museum New York, USA
Crafts Council London, England
Harris Museum, Preston England

His work is included in the permanent collections of many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum London, the Museum of Modern Art New York and the American Craft Museum. He lectures internationally and is currently guest Professor at Tama Arts University. He is also a technical consultant to the textile industry and chairman of the Jovian Christie Incorporation Japan.
