The THROUGH THE SURFACE project has been a series of Mentoring collaborations between 14 textile artists from Britain and Japan. 4 young artists from Britain and 3 from Japan travelled to work with 7 established artists from the opposite country. You can follow the development and progress of these seven exceptional working partnerships through their Journals published on this site. The resulting work became an exhibition of collaboration, process and outcome of textile works spanning fashion, art and science, attracting approximately 83,000 visitors as it toured the UK.
The venues have been: James Hockey Galleries Farnham and Hove Museum and Art Gallery, Fabrica Brighton, the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, Bankfield Museum, Piece Hall and Square Chapel Halifax, the Castle Museum and Art Gallery Nottingham and the Yard Gallery Wollaton Park Nottingham and finally at the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, Japan.Detailed information about the project can be found in the Project Director’s Journal and on the Exhibition Page and the Education page. Press coverage is also posted here. The catalogue is still available from The Surrey Institute of Art and Design. Catalogue order form
